Whether you run a business website or a personal blog, the loss of any data or
information can have serious business consequences and can take weeks to recover
from. This can negatively impact sales, search engine optimization (SEO) rankings,
branding and customer trust. Fortunately, data loss is avoidable with regular and
comprehensive web server backups.
Despite best efforts, hardware failures or software corruption can lead to the
permanent loss of data stored on hard drives or servers. This is why it’s important
for all businesses to back up their websites and web-based data on a regular basis,
ideally daily. In addition to reducing business downtime, a website’s backups can be
used to restore the data and services of a website when it’s hacked or otherwise
rendered inaccessible.
Web hosting providers can offer a variety of backup solutions, from manual to
automated. Manual backups give website owners full control over what is saved, but
they can also be time-consuming and prone to human error. Automated backups
save a lot of time, are more reliable and provide peace of mind knowing that a site’s
data is being saved on a regular basis. NodeSpace, for example, allows cPanel users
to manually create and schedule backups, but they also perform automatic backups
on a daily basis. Additionally, customers can "snapshot" their cPanel accounts before
making changes, which allows them to rollback the changes if needed.
The frequency of backups can vary depending on the type of website. For example,
a website that gets updated frequently with content or images would require more
frequent backups than a static business site. Many web hosting providers offer
managed backup services as part of their plans, which take care of all the details for
website owners and ensure that they are receiving consistent and reliable backups.
Continuous data protection (CDP) is another advanced backup option that captures
data changes in real-time or at scheduled intervals, minimizing data loss in the
event of a disaster.
While hacking and server failures are the most common causes of website data loss,
human error can also play a role. For example, images or content may be
accidentally deleted while updating a website, which is why it’s important to have
regular and comprehensive backups. Backups can be used to revert a website to a
previous point in time, preventing lost revenue and potential reputation damage.
Websites and businesses often face regulatory or compliance challenges that
require regularly backups of data. Having these backups can help organizations
comply with these regulations and demonstrate to auditors and regulatory
authorities that they are taking steps to protect their data.
Finally, regular backups can be helpful in case a website needs to be moved to another host. Often, when a website is migrated to a new hosting provider, the original site will need to be
restored from a recent backup in order to retain its functionality. This can be a
tedious task without a complete backup of the website’s files and database.
